SC orders security for Kathua rape victim's family, others (Second Lead)

The court also issued notices to the state government on a plea that sought the transfer of the case to Chandigarh. The court directed that chargesheet copies should be provided to all accused, and posted the case to April 28, Ankur Sharma, counsel for accused, said.

The minor girl, aged about eight years, was abducted, raped and murdered in the Kathua district of Jammu region in January this year. The SC order came a day after the victim's lawyer Deepika S Rajawat claimed threat to her life.

The bench also directed the state police to provide adequate security to the juvenile delinquent, who has been picked up in relation to the case at the observation home under the law. The next hearing on the plea to transfer case will be on April 27. Senior Supreme Court lawyer, Indira Jaising, appearing for the victim's father, told the Supreme Court, that the atmosphere is not conducive for a fair trial.

The court said that the security so provided would be in plainclothes. Meanwhile, the trial in the Kathua gangrape and murder case began today in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ahmed, a non-affiliated member who wanted the United Kingdom government to take up the issue of self-determination in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and the northeast, mentioned the Kathua rape case while asking how Britain could help bring her assailants and those in other cases to justice.

At the outset, Jaising, who mentioned the matter for an urgent hearing in the forenoon, said the "biological father" of the victim had no grievance with regard to the police probe. "DNA samples have been matched", the lawyer said, adding that she hailed the state police. The chargesheet the Crime Branch filed against eight accused, including a juvenile, revealed sordid details of the crime. The court asked to undergo narco tests on the accused.

Sanji Ram, 60: He is the prime accused in the case. She was kept sedated and sexually assaulted before being bludgeoned to death. Anger and shock have swept the country as details emerged last week of how the child was kidnapped, drugged, raped and brutally killed in captivity.

On January 17, the body of a minor girl was found in the forests near Rasana, Hiranagar.
