SANA: Syrian air defenses repel strike on Shayrat air base in Homs

"None of the combined aircraft or missiles involved in this mission were successfully engaged by Syrian air defenses and there is no indication Russian air defense systems were deployed", EUCOM said in a press release.

Asked about the missile attack, an Israeli military spokesman said, "We don't comment on such reports".

Raw video: Department of Defense releases footage of Tomahawk missiles fired from the USS Higgins toward targets in Syria on April 14th.

Mr Joudeh added shortly after that "another air defence missile was just launched".

The Shayrat Air Base was hit by 59 U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles previous year.

The United States previous year targeted the Shayrat airbase with cruise missiles in response to a sarin gas attack on the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhun.

Also a number of local reporters have said there are "Israeli warplanes" flying at high-altitude carrying out the attack after crossing the borders through Lebanon.

They added that several explosions were heard near the base.

Syrian state television says the country's air defenses shot down missiles targeting its Shayrat airfield late on April 16.

"There is no United States military activity in that area at this time", the Pentagon's spokesperson told Reuters. Syria and its allies most recently accused Israel of launching a strike against Syria's T4 airbase in Homs, killing four Iranian military personnel.

The recent incident follows a coordinated attack by the US, UK and France that saw over 100 missiles launched from US ships and UK Tornado fighter-bombers.
