New BioShock in Development at 2K Games According to Report

Despite Ken Levine's Irrational Games shutting down in 2014 and shutting down all hope of a future for the BioShock series, it looks like the series may be poised for a comeback.

For now, 2K hasn't officially announced a new game in the "BioShock" series, nor did the publisher respond to request for comment. We have yet to see a new game in the franchise hit the newer PS4 and Xbox One consoles thus far.

A new BioShock game is reportedly in the works at an unnamed 2K studio, according to Kotaku's Jason Schreier.

As Kotaku's Jason Schreier reported, the next game in the BioShock franchise is now in development at a secret studio in San Francisco.

This all has been going on while Hangar 13 endured its own share of difficulties.

Since then, the studio has "floundered" as it tries to figure out what its next project should be, with ideas like a fourth Mafia set in Las Vegas during the 70s, a spy game set in Berlin in the 80s, and a music-fueled action game ultimately being abandoned.

The new rumblings on the franchise stem from a a Kotaku report on Mafia III, entitled "How The Makers Of Mafia III Lost Their Way".

Numerous people who helped make Mafia III are now gone, including the game's art director, technical art director, senior producers, design director, many design leads, and a number of other key staff.

"If anyone from Hangar 13 tried to strike up a conversation with them, they'd say, 'Oh, we can't really talk about it, '" said a source familiar with the studio in the report. Some left voluntarily; others were let go or asked to move. Some went to other game companies; others moved to the top-secret studio next door to work on an unannounced new BioShock game. According to the Kotaku story, the team has been struggling to find its next project since the release of Mafia III in 2016, resulting in a rough music game prototype and multiple rounds of layoffs.
