Mourinho admits United lacked 'fluidity' during West Brom defeat

A week after City surrendered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 to United and squander the chance to wrap up the title in ideal style against their arch rivals, it was relegation-bound West Brom who served it up on a plate.

This was not the first time Pogba was substituted early by Mourinho this season, although the 25-year-old had completed the 90 minutes in United's previous four league matches.

City had registered a 3-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday.

In his first season, Guardiola had just two victories against title rivals and had taken only two points in games against Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool, which seriously undermined their Premier League hopes.

More importantly, though, it means Pep Guardiola's City team can not now be caught at the top of the table, thus handing the Catalan coach his first Premier League crown in just his second year in English football.

It is City's fifth English top-flight title, their last Premier League triumph having come in the 2013-14 season.

"I don't know if I was the first or second or third but I congratulated them face to face when I had the chance", Mourinho said.

"We were masters in complication, everything was complicated", Mourinho said during his post-match interview.

After their heroics at the Etihad, United suffered the ignominy of being defeated 1-0 at Old Trafford byWest Brom, thanks to a second-half header from Jay Rodriguez.

Juan Mata echoed comments from Mourinho, accepting United were far below the required standard in defeat to West Brom. City's noisy celebrations in the dressing room after the game irked Mourinho and his side, prompting an altercation between a small number of players and staff.

This frank assessment from the Portuguese manager tells you everything you need to know about United's performance - a laboured, lacklustre loss of both the match and the title. "Probably because I won eight championships, I was not in the moon with the victory against them [City]. One thing we have to improve is consistency".

"You can't take (winning the league) for granted, I've won three now but there's so many we've missed", he said.

"I'm not trying to explain anything here, or to make an excuse, I just want to keep this weekly meeting with you, although in days like this one it's complicated".
