Manchester City Still Best In England After 3-1 Win Over Tottenham

"It's been the story of our season, 70 percent possession, 1-0, lots of chances and then you wonder how you lose the game", said manager Arsene Wenger afterwards.

Burnley earned their fifth straight league win with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City at Turf Moor to boost their chances of possible Europa League qualification. We congratulate them because they are close to winning the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola's side profited from first-half goals from Gabriel Jesus and Ilkay Gundogan, before Raheem Sterling netted in the second period to put the game to bed after Christian Eriksen had given Spurs a slight lifeline.

Sterling's misses preceded City's fall from grace against United and his was the greatest relief of all when, having inexplicably dallied with the goal at his mercy in the 71st minute, he slammed home the rebound after Lloris brilliantly denied Jesus.

Erik Lamela's advances at Manchester City's defence were not welcomed as the visitors defenders were on their toes to avoid surrendering their lead the same way they did in their last two games against United and Liverpool.

But the Catalan produced the flawless counter by introducing Nicolas Otamendi as a second half substitute to tighten up the City defence.

In the race for the Player of the Year award with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, the Belgian has been exceptional this season.

"When I play football I forget about everything else, it is good for me to play", he said after scoring both goals in last month's 2-0 win at Stoke. "For him, for the boys, it's fantastic and today he certainly didn't look like he doesn't want to score in the next few games". Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino scored the other two goals. Though the foul was right on the edge of the box, the referee pointed to the spot and Gündogan hit a flawless penalty kick to make it 2-0 in the 25th minute.

The Dane has played an important role in Spurs' top-four challenge this season. That, and the fact that they overcame the setback of those losses, and put themselves in position to clinch the league easily, bodes well for their future as a team, and shows Pep Guardiola has them making great strides in the right direction and that they would be the team to beat in the Premier League and one of the best in Europe next season as well.

Crystal Palace had been set to drop into the bottom three on goal difference prior to Chelsea's comeback.

Swansea City are directly above Southampton after drawing 1-1 at home to Everton.

City were labouring towards a second consecutive draw when Raheem Sterling's deflected strike dolloped past Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begovic to seal a 2-1 win in a breathless finale at the Vitality Stadium in August.
