Kellyanne Conway once defended Comey against an 'all-out assault' she's now launching

"This guy swung an election", Conway told ABC's George Stephanopoulos, whose highly anticipated interview with Comey aired Sunday night.

President Donald Trump's senior counselor, Kellyanne Conway, slammed former FBI Director James Comey as a publicity hound who is trying to promote his new book.

Conway was likely referring to a letter Comey sent to Congress 11 days before the 2016 general election, in which the then-FBI director wrote that more emails had turned up in the Hillary Clinton email probe. She continued to push back against Cuomo's assertion that Comey's announcement hurt Clinton's chances.

Conway also complained to Stephanopoulos that Comey was given a "free commercial" to urge viewers to vote against Trump.

Following the ABC interview of Comey on Sunday night, RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel wrote on Twitter that Comey "has no credibility" and that Trump was right to fire him.

Conway went on to say that Comey "struggled to answer basic questions", that he's giving "a revisionist version of history", (and, of course that Trump "hardly knew the man").

Conway defended her apparent reversal in an interview with The Daily Beast also on Monday morning, claiming she was being sarcastic in her ABC interview.

After James Comey was sacked as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation last May, many wondered when and if the former director would speak out. "I rolled my eyes and said really, this guy swung an election?"

Second, um, what? Conway said, "This guy swung an election". "Show me the swing states where she was above 50 percent on October 20 before Comey came out ..." I don't think so.

But the president also said in an interview last May that he fired Comey at least in part because of the FBI investigation Comey was then leading into Russian interference in the election and potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
