At least seven people are dead after fights broke out at a maximum security prison in SC, according to authorities.

South Carolina Department of Corrections did not immediately return a request for comment Monday morning.

SCDC says the prison was secured at 2:55 a.m.

Seven inmates were killed and 17 others were injured in an incident at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, authorities said.

The state's Corrections Department described the fights as "multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations".

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from multiple jurisdictions lined up outside to tend to the wounded.

Lee Correctional Institution, which opened in 1993, houses about 1,500 male inmates.

The prison wasn't secured until nearly 3 a.m., the South Carolina Department of Corrections tweeted. In 2013, Michael McCall, then the warden at Lee, said it was the most risky prison in SC. One inmate killed another during a fight in February.
