Facebook Stories updates with Boomerang and AR features

Facebook has also confirmed the fact that the Boomerang will be replacing the looping GIF creation in the Facebook camera; the Boomerang feature, however, is already available on Instagram.

The new feature will let users doodle and scribble on the screen before or while they are recording and see what augmented reality graffiti looks like on various surfaces as they move their phone around.

Instagram has taken a page out of the Facebook book as it will now allow the users to download a copy of the profile of all the information they have shared.

"We wanted to give people an easy way to create with augmented reality and draw in the world around them", said John Barnett, a Camera Product Manager in Facebook. Facebook has warned though that the feature isn't ideal yet, and the quality of the AR experience will depend on the lighting while capturing images as well as how well the contours of the subject are captured.

Apart from the new features, Facebook is also making the panel larger and adding a camera window in the status composer.

Previously, the company revealed its AR effects back at F8 a year ago. TechCrunch has also showcased how this new AR 3D drawing technology will work on your Facebook stories.

For the uninformed, Boomerang is a feature that loops videos back and forwards (hence the name) and have proven very popular with users of Instagram. However, the GIFs created using the earlier tool restarted from the beginning, creating a slightly jarring effect; with the new tool, which has seen huge success on photo sharing platform Instagram, users can now create seamless GIFs on Facebook Stories as well.

AR allows users to doodle on the real world, ie draw their own AR images in real life. Given that it has more users than Snapchat, the pioneer of vanishing posts, Facebook will have an even harder time convincing the people to use its platform and cross-post to Instagram instead.
