Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Casts 'Rogue One' Actor as Mentor

After recent news that Donnie Yen has joined the film, word comes that Gong Li and Jet Li have joined the cast as well.

After first signing Niki Caro (Whale Rider) to direct back in February 2017, Disney's live-action Mulan is now finally moving towards a production start-date. In addition to Jet Li, Gong Li and Donnie, the film stars Liu Yifei as Mulan.

Worldwide action star Donnie Yen has been set to star in the live action Mulan based on Disney's classic animated film and the legendary ballad. Gong Li is another seasoned veteran of the Chinese filmmaking industry, and is now set to play Mulan's villain - a powerful witch.

Jet Li is in final negotiations to portray the Emperor of China who orders one male from each household to be conscripted into the military.

I am not really one to pay attention to Disney's live action adaptations of their popular animated films.

Also joining the cast is Chinese-Vietnamese actress Xana Tang as Mulan's sister, an original character for the movie. Mulan is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a young woman who posed as a man to go to war in her father's place.

Boot Camp won't be the only thing she'll have to face, however, as Mulan has also cast Gong Li in the role of the film's main villain, which will feature a big change from the original animated film. The New Zealand actress has appeared in the series Filthy Rich and Australian series The Letdown and Dead Lucky. Although the live-action Mulan was delayed to 2020 earlier this year, the casting process is well underway now. Yen will star directly opposite her, playing Commander Tung, Mulan's mentor.
