Cynthia Nixon: Marijuana is "Effectively Legal" For White People

Cynthia Nixon: Marijuana is

The progressive Working Families Party has endorsed actress Cynthia Nixon against incumbent Gov. Andrew Cuomo, one day after Cuomo said he would no longer seek the party's endorsement.

Nixon is challenging Cuomo in the Democratic gubernatorial primary.

In March, Nixon first declared her support for legalization, arguing that doing so would raise millions in tax revenue and help the struggling agriculture industry.

Nixon is expected to gain the endorsement from the Working Family Party as well.

"There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity", she said via a video she released on social media.

The endorsement also means that Nixon will be on the November general election ballot even if she does not win the democratic nomination. Cuomo has repeatedly said he doesn't want to legalize recreational marijuana, but he did recently commission a study to examine the effects if the state were to do so. Despite the attention here campaign's received online, most polls show her trailing Cuomo by almost 50 points.

Cuomo's campaign announced that it would not seek the Working Families Party's endorsement this year.

The vote was taken by more than 175 members of the party's state committee.

"Today, the Working Families Party voted to endorse two visionary candidates who will transform NY into a progressive leader and put the power back into the hands of the people, not just a wealthy few". Nixon said in a campaign video posted online Wednesday.

If she runs through November, it could lead to a split vote among left-leaning voters that could benefit Republicans.
