Chevrolet Debuts New 2019 Camaro to Mixed Reactions

Chevrolet's sixth-generation Camaro has just undergone a major mid-life update in the U.S., where it will have to do battle with the also recently upgraded Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger.

For 2019, the Chevrolet Camaro gets a redesigned front fascia, new performance package and additional tech goodies on the inside. Many people including myself expected that it would be introduced at some big auto show where the company could put as many eyes on the refreshed vehicle as possible, but instead, GM opted for a far simpler introduction.

The biggest news on the non-SS front is the arrival of the 1LE performance package for those Camaros fitted with the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Inside the 2019 Camaro gets Chevy's next-generation Infotainment 3 system. The fascia on the SS model is unique with special headlights, a gloss-black grille, a vented hood to aid cooling and aero performance, as well as special air curtains around the corners to further help improve downforce while minimizing drag.

New LED head and tail lights also feature - the former with extended daytime running sections that bleed into the grille area. It comes exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission and its chassis package is derived from the V6 1LE. There's also revised rear bumpers, and new diffusers for RS and SS variants.

Featuring a bolder-looking exterior as well as a plethora of new and updated technologies, Chevrolet plans to keep the Camaro up-to-date while preserving its American Muscle roots. The brand reports that the new 10-speed automatic transmission in the SS Camaro is not same as the 10-speed in the Camaro ZL1.

Check out the new, more sculpted Chevrolet LED taillamps - with red lenses on LS and LT, and dark-tinted neutral-density lenses on the RS, SS, and ZL1. The improved suspension with larger diameter front and rear stabilizers promise better lateral stiffness with tuned dampers to boot.

"The Turbo 1LE is the only 4 cylinder auto on the market to offer 20" tires in 245/40 and 275/35 front to rear.

Inside, the package includes a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob and optional Recaro sports seats.

Chevrolet will reveal pricing closer to the official launch of the 2019 Camaro later this year. Forward collision alert joins a list of available technologies that also includes rear park assist, rear cross traffic alert, and side blind zone with lane change alert.

Chevrolet has also loaded the new Cruze with features such as a new Infotainment with a 7-inch diagonal color touchscreen, 4G connectivity, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. A special Drive Mode Selector includes Sport, Track, and Competition modes with performance readouts and launch control.
