Arsenal make six changes ahead of CSKA Moscow clash

After thrashing the Russian outfit 4-1 in Russia, the Gunners were heavy favourites to progress to the semis but were made to sweat as the Russians stormed to a 2-0 lead in the return leg at the Emirates.

But with the likes of Atletico Madrid and Olympique de Marseille in Friday's draw, Koscielny said Arsenal can ill afford to take their foot off the gas as they appeared to do in a lacklustre opening hour in Moscow. Click the right arrow above to seeSport News's Arsenal player ratings...

'Maybe we were a bit surprised by the intensity of the game and we were not at the races in the first half.

Down 2-0 and on the verge of a shock defeat, Welbeck received the ball on the touchline and deftly lost his marker courtesy of a slick turn, before a give-and-go with Mohamed Elneny gifted the England striker a wonderful finish to give the Gunners a 5-3 lead on aggregate.

"It should be every year".

Arsenal would have to improve to get through the semi-finals, where they will meet one of Marseille, Atletico Madrid or Salzburg. "It's never enough. You could see this week in Europe that you had a lot of turnarounds and you need to be completely focused, so let's be prepared and see who we play".

Stefan Ilsanker's own goal put Marseille level on the night and the French club were ahead inside 10 minutes when a lighting counter-attack ended with Bouna Sarr firing home.

With 19 minutes remaining Lazio still led 5-3 on aggregate but Salzburg scored three times in five insane minutes through Amadou Haidara, Hee Chan-hwang and Stefan Lainer to claim a remarkable 6-5 aggregate victory.

Meanwhile, Atletico held on in the rain in Lisbon to win 2-1 on aggregate against Sporting, despite losing on the night to a Fredy Montero header in the first half.

Arsenal have reached the semi-finals of a European competition for the first time since the 2008-09 Champions League campaign.
