Apple to soon start making iPhone 6s in India - but which model?

Production for the second could begin within a few weeks at Wistron's Bengaluru facility. According to its sources, a locally produced iPhone 6s Plus can bring down prices by 5-7 per cent, making it competitive with the Chinese OnePlus smartphones and some premium models of Samsung, which were insulated from the rise in customs duty since they are all locally produced.

Apple might start manufacturing the iPhone 6s Plus in its Bengaluru facility. The prices of all the iPhone variants, except the iPhone SE, increased three times in the last six months. The iPhone 6S Plus also has the advantage of coming in rose gold, a discontinued color for newer iPhones. To that end, the iPhone SE - Apple's only iPhone with a 4-inch screen - is already manufactured in Indian factories, providing the government with the jobs it seeks while diminishing taxes on that model.

Apple has seen some success, however, by selling its oldest and/or lowest-priced phones in India.

Local assembly of iPhone SE has helped a lot in preventing the prices hick by 6-7 percent. The country raised imported smartphone tariffs from 10 to 15 percent last December, and then from 15 to 20 percent this February. The reason why Indian government is doing this is to boost the local smartphone economy within the country.

Another way for Apple to cut additional costs would be to make parts and packaging all within India as well.

During the declaration of the Union Budget for the year, the government imposed a ten percent customs duty hike on components like printed circuit boards populated with memory and chips, camera modules and connectors.

According to the report, Wistron has set up a new assembly line for the almost three-year-old iPhone 6s Plus, which is now one of Apple's most popular phones in India.

An industry executives said Salcomp is into manufacturing of chargers and adapters for iPhones, while Shenzhen YUTO Packaging manufactures packaging products.
