Andhra Pradesh observes statewide bandh over special status — AP Bandh

Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bore the burnt of the bandh.

"When Naidu was the Opposition leader, he had called for bandhs on many occasions, but as a Chief Minister he is now opposing them (bandhs), saying they hinder development", YSRC political affairs committee member Ambati Rambabu said. The Chief Minister also advised restraint on the part of the protesters so that no inconvenience is caused to the people. Congress and the Left parties backed the call for the bandh to fight for special status for Andhra Pradesh. The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) had promised the Special Category Status (SCS) to the state of Andhra during the 2014 Lok Sabha campaining. "Naidu doesn't have any sincerity on the special category status issue". Reports said that the bandh has been called by Andhra Pradesh's Pratyeka Hoda Saadhana Smiti.

The Chief Minister said the BJP was trying to take the wind out of his sails as he continued to wield a considerable clout at the national level, and by doing politics with the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), it (BJP) meant to keep Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy under its control. The ruling Telugu Desam Party does not support the strike.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu will observe a day-long hunger strike here on his birthday, April 20, in protest against the Centre's non-cooperation towards the state.

The Protests for Special Status for Andhra Pradesh threatens to intensify with every passing day and can further add to the troubles of the government in Centre.

The second half of the Budget Session was washed out due to protest by various parties including the TDP, which sought to move a no-confidence motion against the government after pulling out of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
