7 inmates killed, 17 others injured in SC prison brawl

Seven inmates were killed and 17 others injured in a riot at a maximum security prison in SC, the southern USA state's Department of Corrections said.

The South Carolina Corrections Department says on Twitter State Law Enforcement Division agents responded just before midnight Sunday to "an ongoing situation" at Lee Correctional Institution.

Taillon said multiple inmate fights broke out at 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

He said no officers were wounded.

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from at least seven jurisdictions lined up outside the prison to tend to the wounded.

Some local media outlets reported the local coroner had been called to the scene. The facility has seen multiple insurrections previously, including less than a month ago when three inmates took an officer hostage briefly and assumed control of part of a dorm, per the newspaper.

Lee Correctional is a maximum security facility - 55 miles east of Columbia - housing over 1,000 of South Carolina's most violent offenders.
