19-year-old impersonator who posed as AIIMS doctor for months arrested

From the identity cards recovered from the fake doctor, it was revealed that he belongs to village Baradi Bairiya in East Champaran district and was now residing at Batla House in Jamia Nagar.

The accused, Adnan Khurram, used his fake identity to befriend friends across departments.

"In a recent letter to the authorities of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Resident Doctors" Association (RDA) showed concern over an imposter on the campus, impersonating a junior resident doctor.

According to police, Khurram managed to get his hands on a notebook which is used by junior doctors. Another reason given by him is that he liked spending time with the doctors because he wanted to join the medical profession, the daily quoted police officers as saying. One of the reasons he had given for his crime was that had to help an ailing family member get privileged treatment.

According to RDA president Harjit Singh, Khurram had been observing his activities in the campus for the past many months and made a decision to keep a watch. He has no criminal records and he had posted many pictures on social media wherein he's seen wearing a lab-coat and a stethoscope.

"He would roam around wearing the lab coat and stethoscope all the time". Some of the doctors got suspicious and asked him about his identity. As he was not able to answer questions from the doctors in a satisfactory manner, he was arrested by the police.

Deputy commissioner of police (south) Romil Baaniya said that Khurram had been booked under sections 468 (forgery for objective of cheating) and 419 that pertains to impersonation of the Indian Penal Code at Hauz Khas Police Station, HT reported. "To some, he would claim that he was a junior resident doctor while to junior resident doctors, he would introduce himself as an undergraduate medical student", the newspaper reported. "He made his way to the WhatsApp grpups of the doctors as well".

"As AIIMS consists of at least 2,000 resident doctors, it is very hard to know each and every person personally".

There were also photographs of him with politicians.

Apparently, it seems like it has become easy for people to impersonate as doctors especially at AIIMS since this is not the first fraudulent case that has come up from the apex hospital.
