"While the country still faces challenges in terms of repairing years of economic sluggishness, promises of policy certainty and consistency seem to have had a further positive effect on confidence and the strength of the economy thus far". Sales and service occupations employ the most Richmond residents, while positions in business, finance and administration come up second.

Among the generally positive hiring trends expressed for the Asia-Pacific Region, the country that expressed the most caution was China (+8 percent), where companies have shown only a minor increase in optimism towards hiring over the past three consecutive quarters.

Among the countries and territories featuring seasonally adjusted data, confidence is strongest in Taiwan, Japan, Hungary and the USA, while the weakest hiring prospects are reported in Italy, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, the survey said. However, hiring plans weaken in five sectors, most notably by nine percentage points in the agriculture, hunting, forestry and fishing sector.

Employers in all four regions expect to increase payrolls during the next three months. Payroll gains are forecast for all four organisation size categories during 2Q 2018.

"The improved employment outlook in the Wholesale & Retail Trade sector is encouraging and suggests that businesses are confident consumer demand will hold up in 2018 as wages pressure builds in the economy", said Mr Fischer.

Taiwan's hiring outlook for the second quarter of this year is the most optimistic in the Asia-Pacific region, with the financial/insurance sector showing the strongest willingness to boost its workforce, USA -based human resources advisory firm ManpowerGroup said Tuesday. The Outlook for the East improves by 5 percentage points while hiring prospects are unchanged in the West and remain relatively stable in the North. None of the 4,612 employers surveyed across sectors by US-based workforce solutions company ManpowerGroup said they planned to downsize in April-June 2018. The strong national result is unchanged when compared to the same period previous year, but declines by three percentage points quarter-on-quarter. When compared to the same period past year, the outlook remains upbeat despite notable declines in hiring expectations in crucial sectors such as Mining & Construction and Manufacturing.
