We'll drop our tariffs if you drop yours — Trump to EU

U.S. President Donald Trump set import tariffs on Thursday of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum, to come into force in 15 days.

Trump later tweeted: "The European Union, wonderful countries who treat the USA very badly on trade, are complaining about the tariffs on Steel & Aluminum".

The president has said the tariffs are needed to reinforce lagging American steel and aluminum industries and protect national security.

The steel industry in the US employed approximately 147,000 people during 2015. It's really an assault on our country.

The benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 stock index ended slightly lower after a volatile session after Trump promised the tariffs but then said Mexico and Canada could be exempt. Trump struck an unusually optimistic tone on the fate of the North American Free Trade Agreement, but repeated his threat to quit the pact if the talks fall short. Jeff Flake, (R-Ariz.), who vowed to file a bill to nullify Trump's proclamation.

The process of announcing the penalties has been the subject of an intense debate and chaotic exchanges within the White House, pitting hard-liners against free trade advocates such as outgoing economic adviser Gary Cohn aiming to add more flexibility for USA trading partners.

The ESA, which lobbies for video games and organizes E3 every year, is attending the meeting with Trump at the White House.

The entire Iowa delegation, led by Sen. In the future he added there will be many cases of reciprocal tax which is virtually a tit for tat in tariffs between trading partners. "This is concerning because the easiest target for retaliation is our agriculture exports".

"Modification or removal of the tariffs would be possible if alternative means are agreed upon to ensure imports from a country no longer threaten to impair our national security".

Although the Conference Board of Canada is suggesting the overall decline in the Canadian economy will only be about.5 percent, it cautions that this is an optimistic forecast that doesn't consider the potential full impact of tariffs and other trade barriers. As reported by Polygon, it is highly speculated that the White House has opted due to its inability to respond to gun control proposals that has fueled heated conversations among Democrats and Republicans alike.

Members of both parties warned of a trade war as a result of his action, which includes exemptions for Canada and Mexico.

"I was pleased to see the president acknowledge the strong points I have been making to him".

"A trade war is going to cost our industry jobs and money".

As noted in the White House briefing, the conservation was themed around whether or not violent video games affect the youth of America and desensitizes the community to violence. Speaking today during the White House Press Briefing, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump is looking forward to the event as part of an effort to help keep schools safe.

U.S. Reps. Don Bacon and Adrian Smith of Nebraska have signed on to letters urging the president to reconsider.

The EU insists that it is committed to open, global trade.

Trump offered a confirmation on Friday that his administration was at work negotiating other tariff exemptions.

As the new tariffs go into place, the administration will continue to negotiate on NAFTA. At the same time, The Australian Financial Review reports, Aussie steel and aluminum exports will also be exempted, citing confidence in Canberra that a negotiating process will be a mere "formality". Almost half of Nebraska's exports go to Mexico and Canada.

Bacon, a member of the House Agriculture Committee, said the US needs to remain in NAFTA. He is committed to having a very fair and reciprocal military and trade relationship.
