Vikings Among Several Teams Reaching Out To Free Agent QB Drew Brees

No one has been talking about Brees as a potential free agent, mainly because everyone assumes that he's just going to find a way to make it work with the Saints. But a deal had been expected in February and the two sides were unable to quickly complete a contract after Tom Condon, Brees' agent, met with the Saints at the NFL Scouting Combine.

With the Vikings still reportedly in hot pursuit of free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins, another top-line QB apparently surfaced on the Vikings radar Monday - longtime Saints star Drew Brees.

However, one big name came down from a report made on NFL Network and shared by Tom Pelissero on Twitter: the Vikings have looked into the availability of New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

While it seems as if a return to New Orleans is inevitable, he hasn't signed a deal with the Saints just yet.

Now the other 31 teams in the league can reach out to Brees and attempt to pry him away from New Orleans. Brees' contract will void Wednesday afternoon, and he'll count for $18 million in dead space for the upcoming season.

The NFC South, in particular, has three legit championship contenders in the Saints (with Brees), Panthers, and obviously the Falcons.

Brees is an 11-time Pro Bowler and led the Saints to the 2009 Super Bowl (we won't deep dive, Vikings fans).

An upgrade at quarterback could propel the Minnesota Vikings to the Super Bowl next season, and they appear to be examining all options. But Brees is much, much more than a quality starting quarterback - he's an elite, future Hall-of-Fame quarterback. While Brees leaving the comfort of Sean Payton's offense is still unlikely, the Saints are playing a unsafe game by letting it get to this point.

Day 1 of the "legal tampering" period has not disappointed.
