Trump sacks Rex Tillerson, appoints Central Intelligence Agency chief Mike Pompeo Secretary of State

In a tweet, the President said that Director of the CIA, Mike Pompeo, will take over the position with Deputy Director of the CIA Gina Haspel becoming the new Director.

Trump last Friday asked Tillerson to step aside, and the embattled diplomat cut short his trip to Africa on Monday to return to Washington.

There had been longstanding rumors throughout most of Tillerson's tenure of friction between Trump and his secretary of state, a former Exxon Mobile Corp. CEO.

He also named Gina Haspel the new Central Intelligence Agency head.

"Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!" he added.

Last week, Trump's chief economic advisor Gary Cohn resigned after the president announced he would impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. Trump announced the decision on Twitter today. She would become the CIA's first female director. The President has not yet given any explanation for the change.

He tweeted the news on Tuesday morning, thanking Tillerson for his service and saying that Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

CBS North Carolina will update this story as it develops.
