Suspect in SUNY Binghamton nursing student murder was 'obsessed' with her

Orlando Tercero, 22, was wanted by authorities in Broome County in connection with the death of his ex-girlfriend Haley Anderson, 22, a senior nursing student.

Nicaragua National Police told the network that Tercero was being transferred to the prison in El Chipote, about 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua. Her death was ruled a homicide the next day, after an autopsy was performed.

Anderson's body was discovered decomposing in Tercero's bed last Friday.

Authorities searching for the person of interest in the killing of a NY college student have trained their focus on Nicaragua after police say it was determined her ex-boyfriend took a flight to the Central America country hours after her death. "Then we put two and two together quickly".

Tercero is from Miami and was also a nursing student at the school. "The investigation determined that the person of interest has left the United States by worldwide air travel flight, prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", police said in a statement over the weekend.

Anderson was last seen alive around 4 a.m. on Thursday and was with her roommates before she went missing, police said.

The two had dated and a friend described Tercero and "obsessive and insane".

"They hooked up in the past, but to her, it was pretty platonic and she didn't want to have anything seriously", Topalli said.

Friends say Anderson had just secured a job as a nurse that would've started after she graduated this spring, TIME reports. Tercero is a USA citizen, they noted.

In a statement, Broome County District Attorney Steve Cornwell said his office will be seeking an indictment from a grand jury in the case, and after one is granted, will file a warrant for Tercero's arrest.
