Shakhtar Donetsk eliminated from tournament

Roma reached the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time in 10 years as Edin Dzeko edged them past Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday and allowed the Italians to win the tie on away goals.

Having trailed 2-1 from the first leg, Roma looked bereft of ideas for much of the contest before Dzeko broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute following a tepid first half devoid of goalmouth action.

Despite being a man down, Shakhtar launched a late onslaught and had several unsafe raids down the left flank but the home team's defence held on until the final whistle.

Alessandro Florenzi flicked a risky backwards header just wide of his own goal and a nervous home crowd witnessed the visitors maintaining a level of control throughout the first half, Pyatov intercepting when Aleksandar Kolarov led a rare Roma foray.

The Bosnian took a defence-splitting pass from midfielder Kevin Strootman into his stride and beat the offside trap before he steered the ball into the far corner with the outside of his foot past advancing keeper Andriy Pyatov.

A mistake from Federico Fazio saw Facundo Ferreyra go clear on goal, but the Argentine defender was able to recover in time to put his opponent off - his shot going well wide of Alisson Becker's post.

Fred recycled the ball and Taison danced by challenges, but they could not muster the necessary response and tempers flared as Ordets tugged back Dzeko to see red with 11 minutes remaining, Ferreyra clashing with a ball boy to earn just a yellow as Roma held on.

Romelu Lukaku replied for the Red Devils, but it wasn't enough after the first leg ended goalless in Seville.

The judicial Committee of UEFA announced the referees for the second leg of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League between Shakhtar and Roma.

4 - Shakhtar Donetsk have won four of their five competitive games against Roma (L1), all in the Champions League.

Ukrainians Shakhtar had Ivan Ordets sent off after he pulled Dzeko down by the shirt.
