Probe Agency Summons Ex-Nagaland Chief Minister In Terror Funding Case

The NIA on Monday summoned former Nagaland Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang for questioning in connection with an alleged "tax collection and terror funding" case while the leader through a letter to the agency expressed his inability to appear due to assembly session beginning on Tuesday and sought a fresh date.

"The NIA notice was served to Mr. Zeliang through fax belonging to the Chief Minister's Office 15 minutes past midnight on March 12". In its chargesheet filed in 2017 against Isak Sumi, Khetoshe Sumi and another finance collection agent, Victo Swu, NIA had claimed that they raised funds through illegal tax collection and extorted money from government offices to support the banned organization in its activities. "I shall, therefore, be grateful if I am summoned to appear before you on another date after the session", Zeliang added.

In April a year ago, the NIA had arrested three senior officials of the Nagaland government for their alleged role in large scale extortion and illegal tax collection on behalf of the NSCN (K) from various government departments. "The latest summoning of the former CM comes before the Assembly session is scheduled from March 13-26", Mr. Hau said.

The NPF has found the timing of the notice fishy, more so as it had been routed through the CMO six days after Mr. Zeliang resigned as Chief Minister.

The NPF has also posed the same question over the NIA summon issued to the former Chief Minister and has alleged that the agency is being used for political mileage.

NPF said the whole development raised very serious questions as to whether a "well-webbed political vendetta" was being played out against Zeliang who "championed and was ready to sacrifice for the cause of Naga people and their 70 decades struggle". "The three officers. complied and appeared before the NIA officer concerned at the Guwahati NIA branch office", the NPF said in the statement.

The matter came to light and the agency summoned the three top officials from the state government allegedly involved in the act including the Officer on Special Duty (OSD).

Zeliang has been asked to appear in NIA headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday with relevant documents. The extortion cases in Nagaland have been investigating by NIA since August 2016.
