President repeats his support for execution of drug dealers

"Not all of our friends on Wall Street love it, but we love it", Trump said of the tariffs. "Rick is going to vote for us all the time, all the time".

President Trump touted his decision last week to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

But it's not clear what effect that could have on the final outcome. I said: 'Bye-bye. We're not making a deal.'" North Korea, he said, was "tough", and "should have been handled. and everybody will say it, too.

Colleen Wooten, a Steelworkers staff representative, said Lamb has connected with the region's working class.

Former Vice President Joe Biden campaigns for Conor Lamb, right, the Democratic candidate for the March 13 special election in Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District, during a rally in Collier, Pa., March 6, 2018. The seat had been held by GOP Rep. It became vacant after eight-term Congressman Tim Murphy resigned amid scandal.

Trump has already visited the district twice to try to buoy Republican Rick Saccone.

So the energy behind the Saccone effort is brought in from Washington, D.C.: the National Republican Congressional Committee and Republican National Committee, plus superPACs Congressional Leadership Fund and America First Action.

But Trump quickly steered away from his main objective.

President Donald Trump praised other countries for imposing the death penalty or life in prison for drug dealers Saturday, saying the United States should consider similar penalties.

Trump said he spoke with leaders in Asia about how they handled the drug problem.

At least for one more day, the hills of southwestern Pennsylvania are alive with the sound of campaign cash.

Georgia's 6th district, held by former Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, ultimately went to Republican Rep. Karen Handel following a bid from Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff that wound up going into a runoff.

Trump also said he hoped to run for re-election against Democrat Oprah Winfrey, although the entertainer has ruled out a run.

Public and private polls from both parties have found a margin-of-error race with the wind behind Lamb, who was down a few points in multiple surveys late last month. "Don't forget, this got us elected", Trump said of his casual, seat-of-the-pants speaking style. "Personally, I like Rick Saccone".

Trump also used the speech to double down on executing drug dealers, a solution he said has worked in China and Singapore.

Pennsylvania's 18th Congressional District has an estimated 17,000 steelworkers and nearly 90,000 voters from union households.

While the telegenic young Lamb has impressed even Republicans with his disciplined campaign, and calculated splits with the national Democratic Party, Republicans have blasted Saccone for weak fundraising, an inability to tell his own story as a veteran, his deep hostility to unions in a union-heavy district, and past mistakes like telling a mother whose kid had died of opioid abuse that addiction was a "family responsibility" and it's not taxpayers' responsibility to help, a brutal remark in a district where opioids are a serious problem. He stressed that Lamb would protect programs such as Social Security and Medicare, according to video of the event posted on Facebook.

"'Women won't like Donald Trump, '" he portrayed critics as having said during his campaign.

"If the Democrats are able to come close, or win this, it will send shock waves across the political world", Kevan Yenerall, a political science professor at Clarion University, said in an interview in the town of Mount Lebanon. "It's not a national election".
