Even that was less-than-smooth. For the season, Butler has defeated opponents by an average of 6.6 points. The Spartans are 3 for 17 from the field. Kamar Baldwin had a good game for Butler, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.

Even though Butler is seeded 10th in the East Region, they are a risky team to face.

While those two teams haven't played since 1998, Boilermakers fans surely remember Beard - for all the wrong reasons.

Texas Tech was the Big 12 runner-up this season, and is in its first Sweet 16 since 2005. Given Haas averaged 15 points and six boards this season, that was a huge blow for the No. 2 Boilermakers.

The Bulldogs trailed by 10 with less than 6 minutes left and had a shot to tie the game when they had the ball with 1.8 seconds left. If Haas is unable to go, Matt Haarms will likely be in line to pick up a healthy share of minutes.

Head coach LaVall Jordan of the Butler Bulldogs looks on against the Arkansas Razorbacks during the first half of the game in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Little Caesars Arena on March 16, 2018 in Detroit, Michigan. Haas averaged 18.3 points over those three games - 3 points above his season average - but the team obviously wasn't better for it.

The point spread for this game has not moved off the original number of 3.5 and the total has also stayed put at 144. His size and strength still profile well, but a team would have to be in love with him to use a second-rounder. This edition of the Bulldogs has been as effective as any in recent years, with senior forward Kelan Martin leading the way for Butler's offense.

Vince Edwards scored 12 points and picked up a third foul just 3 seconds before halftime. He practiced Saturday and took some shots with his team before Sunday's game while wearing a large black brace.

Referee DJ Carstensen told The Associated Press during warmups Sunday that Haas would not be allowed to play with the brace.

If Haas is out, the Boilermakers will be missing their best big man - a 7-foot-2 standout who creates so many matchup problems.

Injured center Isaac Haas did not play for the Boilermakers.

The Ramblers are moving on. Really outside of the one big they play pretty small.

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins had a championship contender of his own derailed by a major injury back in 2000, when he was at Cincinnati.

"He wants to play and he wants to get out there", Painter said.

Here's the starting lineup. However, a subsequent X-ray revealed a fracture in his elbow that will require surgery.

Again, Haas did participate to some small extent in practice Saturday morning, though apparently not in any sort of team context.
