The portraits were commissioned by the Gallery, for Kehinde Wiley to create President Obama's portrait, and Amy Sherald that of Michelle Obama.

News of the pending deal follows several big tie-ups between Netflix and some Hollywood heavy-hitters - including a $100 million agreement with Scandal and Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, and a $300 million dollar, five-year deal with Glee and American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy.

The proposed deal was reported Friday by The New York Times, which cited people familiar with the discussions who were not identified.

Mr Obama appeared in the debut episode of David Letterman's Netflix series, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, which began on the streaming service in January.

Instead, Michelle and Barack Obama have reportedly discussed working on a series that focuses on inspirational stories.

A deal could give Netflix an edge in the competitive landscape of streaming media services, which includes Amazon and Hulu.

The deal followed a heated auction for global rights to the two books with bidding that reached more than $60 million, a record sum for U.S. presidential memoirs, the Financial Times had reported a year ago.

"President and Mrs. Obama have always believed in the power of storytelling to inspire", Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to Obama, told the Times on Thursday. Although the move might seem controversial in the United States, Michelle and Barack Obama are still very well-liked and respected internationally. It won't come cheap, though.

Former United States President Barack Obama has been confirmed to be in talks with streaming video on demand (SVOD) site Netflix to produce a string of shows.
