Netflix's 'The Crown' Paid Claire Foy Less Than Co-Star Matt Smith

Netflix's 'The Crown' Paid Claire Foy Less Than Co-Star Matt Smith

So it's even a little more ironic that, although Netflix spent nearly $7 million per episode for The Crown, Foy was paid less for her work than Smith was.

Netflix is adjusting the pay of its stars on The Crown.

Unfortunately for Foy, she will never get that chance to make an on-par salary - as the Queen ages on the show, she's been replaced by actor Olivia Colman for at least the next season. Producers Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries admitted at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem that Smith had a larger salary on The Crown because of his popularity from his run on Doctor Who. "Who" on television - one of Britain's most popular shows, the producers said.

This demonstrates the problematic wage gap in the industry. During the interview, "The Crown" producers said that Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip, was paid more than Claire Foy, who played Queen Elizabeth, due to his existing fame playing "Doctor Who". Most recently, it was revealed that Michelle Williams made virtually nothing in comparison with her "All the Money in the World costar Mark Wahlberg, despite their near-equal star status".

She earned a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actor's Guild Awards for best actress following the first season.

According to Variety, Elisabeth Moss earned $200,000 per episode on The Handmaid's Tale after racking up six Emmy nominations during her time on Mad Men. Mackie added, "Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen".

To be fair, Smith also received many award nominations for his work on the show, though it wasn't as resonant a performance as it was for Foy.

Oh, dear: Even the Queen of England has difficulty getting paid as much as her male counterpart.

Foy was paid an estimated $40,000 per episode ($800,000 in total for 20 episodes), while the first two seasons of The Crown cost Netflix around $130 million. A replacement for Smith's role as Prince Philip has not been announced yet.
