Lok Sabha bypolls in Uttar Pradesh: Counting of votes begins

The constituency had fallen vacant previous year following Yogi Adityanath's resignation as the Lok Sabha MP from this seat after he was made the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. After seven rounds of counting SP candidate Pravin Kumar Nishad is leading by 9,446 votes against his nearest rival and BJP candidate Upendra Dutt Shukla.

For the BJP, the election is a prestige issue for chief minister Yogi Adityanath who represented the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat five times in a row till he took over as chief minister in 2017. In Phulpur, the Samajwadi Party has fielded Nagendra Singh Patel, an OBC leader.

In Bihar, the BJP is leading in Bhabua assembly constituency by about 2,500 votes - a seat that is already held by it.

Gorakhpur/Patna: Counting of votes for bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats - Phulpur and Gorakpur in Uttar Pradesh and Araria in Bihar - is underway.

This is the first time in Gorakhpur when an SP candidate is leading in the home of Yogi Adityanath.

An official of the Election Commission told Firstpost that Akhilesh Yadav-led and backed by Mayawati Samajwadi Party is leading from Phulpur Lok Sabha constituency.

Gorakhpur Bypoll: SP's Praveen Kumar Nishad leading with 29,218 votes, BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla at a close second with 29,194 votes. The Rashtriya Janata Dal was ahead in Jehanabad by almost 8,900 votes.

However, Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya exuded confidence and said that the BJP would taste victory with a comfortable margin of a lakh votes in Gorakhpur and Phulpur. By-elections were also held for two assembly seats in the state - the BJP is leading in Bhabua while the RJD is leading in Jahanabad, both parties holding.

The voter turnout was 47.45 per cent in Gorakhpur and 37.39 per cent in Phulpur in Sunday's polling. BJP got 82811 votes. The RJD candidate Brij Mohan is ahead by 15,000 votes, virtually ensuring the seat for the party.

Snags in the electronic voting machines (EVMs) were reported from some places.

Phulpur Bypoll: Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel leading by 1437 votes with 7600 votes, BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel 6163 votes after round 3.
