Karti Chidambaram in Tihar Jail till March 24

Karti Chidambaram in Tihar Jail till March 24

Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport on his return from the United Kingdom, in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 a year ago alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the Union finance minister. Karti Chidambaram's father P Chidambaram was present in the courtroom during the hearing. "He can not be exposed to any of these criminals", Krishan said. Karti's counsel have moved the court with a plea for his bail from the custody.

Jail authorities should ensure proper security and safety as per rules, he said. "He [Karti Chidambaram] can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison", the court said.

The CBI produced Karti, son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, in a Delhi court after his three-day police custody expired and sought 15-day judicial custody.

Countering the CBI plea for sending him to 15 days' judicial custody, Karti's lawyer Dayan Krishnan moved three applications to consider bail application, special cell with attached bathroom and allowing books, own clothes, medicines, home food and spectacles.

"During the entire period of police custody remand, Karti Chidambaram was evasive and non-cooperative". He also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody.

Reacting to the probe agency's submission, defence counsel said that there is serious apprehension of threat to Karti Chidambaram's life as CBI is opposing his plea seeking security arrangements in Tihar Jail.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Karti, said even he has been subjected to abuses and threats on the twitter for which there has been often no recourse.

The CBI Judge, after hearing the parties, observed that no separate prison shall be provided to Karti. Today the CBI would appraise the court about the fresh details that have cropped up following the questioning of Karti's chartered accountant, Bhaskararaman. The court is likely to hear the CBI matter on March 19.

He was being quizzed by the CBI for the last 12 days since his arrest on February 28. It, however, later revised the figure to $1 million (about Rs 6.50 crore at the current exchange rate and Rs 4.50 crore in 2007).
