How the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes affects the AFC West

Free agent quarterback Kirk Cousins will sign the largest fully guaranteed contract in National Football League history if he formally agrees to join the Minnesota Vikings later this week, as first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday.

The New York Jets planned to bring back Josh McCown on a one-year, $10 million contract. Ever since Monday when teams can speak to players and offer pitches before free agency hits on Wednesday, general manager Mike Maccagnan has been rather quiet.

The Vikings made the NFC Championship game last season and appear to see Cousins as the missing piece to combine with their impressive defense and wide receiving corps.

While he makes his decision, ESPN reports a camera crew will follow Cousins. Washington acquired quarterback Alex Smith in a trade with Kansas City in January.

With the Minnesota Vikings going with Kirk Cousins, they likely will let at least two of their three quarterbacks go.

Four days after the Browns dropped out of the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes by trading for Tyrod Taylor, the Broncos appear to have followed suit.

"Will only confirm they'll get the first visit", McCartney told the the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Which version of Case Keenum are the Denver Broncos going to get - the player who we saw in Houston and St. Louis, or the player we saw previous year in Minnesota? The rash of injuries to quarterbacks makes the guarantee a risky deal, but at three years, Minnesota seems willing to pull the trigger on it.

However, there were reports in recent days - like one from Yahoo's Charles Robinson - that the Packers and Rodgers were waiting until the Cousins deal was done, to set the market for what Rodgers would receive.

Reported to be the target of numerous quarterback-needy teams, Cousins has shown his worth over the past three seasons as the starter for the Washington Redskins.

Assuming Cousins, who turns 30 on August 19, signs with the Vikings and starts in Week 1 of the regular season, he would be the Vikings' sixth different opening day starter in seven years at quarterback.

With players surrounding Sam Bradford in Arizona like Larry Fitzgerald and David Johnson, as well as a good offensive line, the Vikings hope to keep their new quarterback upright.
