Giants Sign Former Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart to Two-Year Deal

According to ESPN, Carolina's all-time leading rusher is expected to sign with the New York Giants.

The Giants today added both skill and experience to their offensive backfield when they signed Jonathan Stewart, who spent his first 10 National Football League seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Before the 2012 season, he got a five-year, $37.8 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed, then got a one-year, $8 million extension before the 2017 season.

Carolina selected Stewart with the No. 13 overall pick in 2008 out of OR, and he became the Panthers' all-time rushing leader with 7,318 rushing yards in his career. "He's a terrific addition for us at this time".

The Giants were 26th in rushing yards and tied for 28th in rushing touchdowns in 2017, so Stewart fills a need at running back to some extent. Orleans Darkwa, who led the Giants in rushing last season, is a free agent.

In his 10 professional seasons, Stewart rushed for 7,318 yards and 51 scores on the ground.

Stewart worked with Shula extensively when the latter was moved from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator prior to the 2013 season. Plus, there are a whole host of promising running back prospects in this year's draft like, say, Saquon Barkley, who the Giants could take at No. 2 overall.

The Oregon product has been a steady and consistent force throughout his career with seven seasons of more than 700 rushing yards and is a powerful runner who serves as a reliable option inside the red zone and when Carolina needs a critical short-yardage pickup.
