FOX Chairman Says There is Talk About Buffy Revival 'Frequently'

FOX Chairman Says There is Talk About Buffy Revival 'Frequently'

Speaking at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem (via Variety), Fox TV group chair Gary Newman says Buffy is always on the studio's mind. He called it "the most ripe show we have for bringing back". "And until Joss decides it's time, it won't happen".

I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer. During its seven-season run, the drama-comedy-supernatural mishmash created by Joss Whedon represented a lot of storytelling highs, while behind the scenes, it launched the careers of a number of great writers, including "UnREAL" co-creator Marti Noxon, "Once Upon a Time" executive producer Jane Espenson, "The Martian" screenwriter Drew Goddard, and many others.

As Newman said, Fox has brought back a number of its older properties lately, including "The X-Files", "24" and "Prison Break".

Newman didn't specify a reboot or a revival, but clarified that he wasn't announcing anything official. "When Joss decides it's time, we'll do it", Newman explains.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is perhaps a universe even more closely tied to Joss Whedon's image than the short-lived Firefly, if only because its run was so much longer and its legacy that much more intense. Seeing her back on the small screen would not only be timely, but contribute to the current television landscape that needs to show more girls as action heroes.

Whedon may not be ready to bring Buffy the Vampire Slayer back, but we can still cross our fingers, right? "Buffy Speak" has been adopted by multiple shows, and having complex but flawed female heroines, with a touch of glam, is more the norm.

Gellar (aka Buffy, herself) celebrated the series' 21st anniversary last weekend by sharing a nostalgia-packed Instagram gallery of her favorite moments. Let us know what you think in the comments section.

The story has continued in the pages of the comics published by Dark Horse since 2007. "From now on, we won't just face our fears, we will seek them out". It wouldn't be like, 'I can't believe we're still in high school! You can see everything from Jessica Jones to Teen Wolf taking its cues from Buffy. The fanbase for Buffy exists as strongly as ever in terms of participating in discourse.
