Ford Mustang California Special Gets Updates Inside and Out

America's favorite sports vehicle gets even more style and technology for 2019 thanks to the revival of the legendary Mustang GT California Special, new technology features including rev-matching on 5.0-liter manual-equipped models, the first-ever custom-tuned B&O Play premium audio system for Mustang and three new vintage-inspired colors and over-the-top stripes.

The first Cali Special, introduced for 1968 as the Mustang GT/CS, was a dealer special inspired by a 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype. The GT/CS will join the Bullitt as new-again special editions.

New for 2019 is a rev-matching six-speed manual. A signature Ebony Black and Race Red script California Special badge adorns the trunk lid. New five-spoke wheels, blacked-out grille, and a front splitter borrowed from the Performance Pack 1 round out the cosmetic changes.

Ford officials liked the California Special so much that they chose to offer a limited number of cars of the 1968 model year.

Cabin-wise, those looking to get the California Special should expect black Miko suede seats with red stitching.

"Few things are more satisfying than dropping the top on a California Special and taking a drive down the majestic Pacific Coast Highway", says Ford Designer Mark Conforzi. Buyers will have the choice to add a new 1,000 watt, 12-speaker B&O system to the Mustang.

Power and torque remain the same 460 hp/420 lb-ft as the regular 2018 Ford Mustang GT. This option is not offered on the EcoBoost engine, but that engine will now offer an optional active exhaust system for 2019. Outside, the Blue Oval is offering new vintage-inspired paint colors including Need for Green, Velocity Blue and the gorgeous Dark Highland Green which we saw on the Bullitt Mustang.

The 2019 Ford Mustang will go on sale this summer.
