Did A Wrinkle in Time Really Need That Intro From Ava DuVernay?

The Compton native's relatively late to the movie game and has already got some pretty impressive films under her belt like Selma, 13, and more recently, A Wrinkle In Time. This of course could be said about most of the young adult adaptations that have populated screens, to varying degrees of success, after the tested formats of franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games.

Entertainment Weekly's Darren Franich noted that it "hits that unfortunate un-sweet spot common to big-budget science-fiction/fantasy, where the spectacle feels more summarized than experienced". The worlds are expansive and varied and would be interesting if the film stuck to them for more than 10 minutes at a time. Rather, her appearance is DuVernay's creative extrapolation of a small but memorable detail in L'Engle's novel. Simply put, L'Engle's novel stands, to this day, as one of the more complex works of YA fiction.

As far as other specialty releases, IFC Films' The Death of Stalin, directed by Veep creator Armando Ianucci and starring Steve Buscemi and Jeffrey Tambor, took in $181k in four theaters in NY and L.A., an impressive $45k per theater.

Out of the long list of Marvel films, "Black Panther" is the fifth MCU movie to pass the billion-dollar mark and the only origin story to do so. It's very CGI-heavy, but a lot of Disney films with big budgets are, and the amount of color and vibrance that is injected into the film is super fun and refreshing to look at.

The rules of dimensional travel may be a bit of an afterthought, but the redefinition of being chosen is presumably a heady enough concept for younger viewers raised on notions of a singular, special hero or heroine. Which (Oprah Winfrey). She later tells Meg, "I am a part of the universe, just like you, Meg". However, following every action scene is a sequence where the characters are in a perfectly manicured neighborhood with people who seem hypnotized, a clip reminiscent of Get Out. "It's truly a journey of a girl who, without seeing and having real evidence of her father, makes a bargain to travel throughout the universe to find him", Whitaker told Jesuit publication America magazine this week.

Unfold your love (or hate) for all things "A Wrinkle in Time" in the comments. Pine is wonderful as the reckless but inspirational dad Dr. Murry, and McCabe is a breakout star, stealing the film from his co-stars as the odd little brother. "I'll give you an example: There was a time when it was super lean for me, broke rapper shit, eating Top Ramen".

Tim Grierson of Screen International said: "Director Ava DuVernay emphasises an emotional clarity and narrative simplicity that allows the book's sci-fi examination of friendship, family and forgiveness to resonate with nearly mythic force".
