De'Andre Hunter out for NCAA Tournament: Broken wrist

A broken wrist will keep De'Andre Hunter, the ACC's Sixth Man of the Year, out of the NCAA tournament.

Hunter, earlier chosen ACC Sixth Man of the Year, apparently suffered the injury before or during the ACC Tournament this past weekend and will undergo surgery Monday. At 6-7, 222 pounds, the freshman has the length to guard almost every position on the floor, and he was also a spot-up shooter averaging 38.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

Virginia tips off against No. 16 seed UMBC (24-10) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 16.

This is the second straight year they have lost a key player late in the season. He reached double figures in 16 games and was Virginia's leading scorer six times.

He scored his season-high 23 points November 19 in U.Va.'s 73-53 win against Monmouth. He banked in a buzzer-beating 3-pointer at Louisville on March 1 to cap an improbable comeback in a 67-66 victory, and then made several critical free throws in the final minutes of the ACC title game as Virginia held off North Carolina, 71-63.

Guard Marco Anthony got a chance to shine January 31 in a rare big role off the bench when Johnson was serving the first game of a three-game suspension.
