China's Xi says looks forward to smooth US-North Korea talks

In response, Yang said that the recent positive developments on the Korean Peninsula will put the issue of the North's denuclearization back on the track of dialogue.

"We are looking forward to the smooth holding of the summit meeting between the two Koreas and the dialogue between North Korea and the USA and achieving concrete progress in promoting the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the normalization of relations between each other", Xi said.

Yang said China insists on all parties "sticking to solving the issue through dialogue and consultation".

South Korea's national security adviser on Monday thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping for his "big role" in the diplomatic process that has set up a historic summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un.

Chung announced last week that Trump had said that he would meet Kim by May "to achieve permanent denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula.

The meeting came just days after Chung headed a delegation to Pyongyang and Washington as part of a push by Seoul to have an inter-Korea summit by the end of April.

Another envoy, South Korean National Intelligence Service chief Suh Hoon, also arrived in Tokyo for a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Japan and South Korea agreed today that maximum pressure must be maintained on North Korea until it takes concrete action towards addressing concerns about its nuclear weapon and missile programmes, Japan's foreign minister said.

Cheng also said that while Beijing's role in the leaders' summits may be limited, "it's hard for North Korea to ignore China as China remains its neighbour and a country with veto power at the United Nations Security Council".

By way of geography, its growing influence and established interest on the Korean Peninsula, China "was bound to play an important role in promoting denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in particular and shaping the geopolitical order in Northeast Asia in general", Cheng wrote.

The dramatic turn of events follows a flaring of tensions up until late previous year as the North continued its nuclear and missile tests despite strong condemnation from the worldwide community. -South Korean war games.
