Celtics' Smart out indefinitely with thumb injury

In search of another opinion on his injured right thumb, Celtics guard Marcus Smart is setting up a trip to NY.

Smart will get a second opinion on the extent of the injury.

Smart was seen wearing a protective cast on his shooting hand after the 99-97 loss to the Indiana Pacers.

The Celtics are confident that Irving's knee soreness is merely tendinitis and that he likely won't miss significant time, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports.

Even if the diagnosis is confirmed to be a torn right thumb, Smart may not necessarily require surgery and could play through the injury.

Smart's injury also leaves the Celtics with few healthy backcourt players until Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown return from their respective injuries.

Marcus Smart is being evaluated for a potentially torn tendon in his right thumb, two people with knowledge of the situation tell Celtics Wire.
.

Smart is averaging 10.2 points, 4.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 29.9 minutes this season. Smart is now going over his treatment options with the Celtics medical staff, but with no clear timetable to return, he should be sent to the waiver wire in most cases.
