Cards expected to release RB Adrian Peterson on Monday

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Arizona Cardinals are expected to release future Hall of Fame running back Adrian Peterson.

Star running back David Johnson is expected to be fully healthy for Arizona after suffering a season-ending wrist injury in Week 1.

Peterson, 32, would be owed a $750,000 bonus on Friday, the third day of the league year, if he were still on the team.

Peterson missed all of December due to a neck injury, finishing with 129 carries for 448 yards (3.5 average), two touchdowns and three fumbles (two lost) in six games for the Cardinals.

According to Spotrac.com, the Cardinals are freeing up over $2.88 million in cap space by releasing Peterson.

"I think I would want to play maybe four more years, four to five more years", Peterson told the St. Paul Pioneer Press last month.

As part of the trade, the Cardinals sent New Orleans a conditional sixth-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Schefter reports that there is a chance he could return to the Cardinals.
