Browns trade DT Shelton to Patriots

The Browns knew it would be hard to lure free agents to Cleveland because their record of 1-31 the past two seasons under coach Hue Jackson reeks of incompetence. But seriously, they are promising to be active.

The Baltimore Ravens enter free agency, which begins on March 14, with easily has the worst depth at wide receiver in the AFC North.

Moments later, last year's starting quarterback DeShone Kizer was sent to the Green Bay Packers for defensive back Damarious Randall, who is a good bet to start at cornerback for the Browns this year.

The Cleveland Browns haven't been relevant in the National Football League playoff race since 2002, but general manager John Dorsey is making sure the team stays relevant in the headlines throughout the 2018 offseason.

The 25-year-old, who caught a league-best 112 passes last season, immediately upgrades a Cleveland offense that finished last in scoring and didn't have any player who threatened a defense until wide receiver Josh Gordon made his late return from an indefinite NFL suspension. The last 6 quarterbacks taken with the number one pick are Jared Goff, Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Sam Bradford, and Matthew Stafford. 5 of them have made the pro bowl at least one time and the only exception is Sam Bradford, who has been a solid starter when he is not injured.

"Beyond the Playbook" correspondent Matt Sabuda believes the trade now gives the Bills the currency needed to move up in the draft to target one of the highly touted quarterback prospects.

Re-signing Terrelle Pryor is a possibility. Taylor can make plays happen with his arm and his legs. Haley spent the past six seasons working with Ben Roethlisberger, Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell.

Dorsey's remake of the Browns isn't over.

Also worth mention, the AFC North is in a bit of a transition as well. Hyde's 2017 production underlines the degree to which Hyde had been out of position through much of his time in Green Bay.

It is still uncertain if they have enough talent to go up against the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals for the division.

The San Francisco 49ers'Eric Reid and the San Diego Chargers' Tre Boston are among the safeties set to hit the open market. In Cleveland, he'll get not only a fresh start, but likely a new position. The Chiefs'Ron Parker, who'll reportedly be released, was in Kansas City during Dorsey's entire tenure there.

For the Cleveland Browns, the 2018 NFL Draft will be crucial to the continued improvement of this franchise. The deal could still fall through, as we saw previous year, but a wide receiver corps of Landry, Gordon, and Coleman is a nice start.

The Browns also could use a defensive end, where former Williams pupil William Hayes is a familiar face, and a blocking tight end.

And the makeover came as the team awaits word from Pro Bowl left tackle Joe Thomas on his future. If he becomes a free agent, he'd draw interest as soon as the first tier of corners go off the board.
