Apple Music Now Has 38 Mln Subscribers

By comparison, industry leader Spotify had 71 million paying subscribers as of December 2017, Amazon Music Unlimited has 16 million paying customers and Internet radio pioneer Pandora has just 5.48 million total subscribers according to Reuters.

"Listeners describe music in different ways, and understanding that information will help improve, extend, and confirm the information that describes music on Spotify", a Spotify spokesperson explained to Variety.

Apple is now in battle with music streaming services from tech giants like Amazon.com Inc and Google as well as other dominant streaming music services like Spotify. However, Apple Music and Spotify's combined subscribers only touch 100 million.

The service now has more than 159 million active users, in over 60 countries (most of Europe, most of the Americas, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Asia).

Ahead of the official launch tomorrow, the Spotify Web site went live with pricing today.

South Africans will be able to use a free service from Tuesday or pay for a premium subscription. Spotify offers a free tier of service that is supported by ads.

Spotify is expected to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in the coming weeks despite losing almost $1.5 billion in 2017. Cue said Apple has 8 million subscribers now in the free trial period, the first time Apple has disclosed the number of trial users.
