NY state prison inmates to receive free tablet computers

Prison inmates in NY will soon have tablet computers.

The state says the tablets won't have Internet access, but inmates will be able to use email and law library materials.

Clarification on the new tablet initiative at DOCCS.

The tech gadgets will be provided to the state by Florida-based firm JPay no cost to taxpayers, DOCCS Commissioner Anthony Annucci said when he unveiled the plan during a state budget hearing.

The tablets will not be able to connect to the internet, but inmates will be able to use the tablets to purchase music, e-books, videos, and other entertainment. They will have access to special kiosks that will send emails to an approved list of recipients.

The program is expected to roll out later this year.

According to DOCCS, JPay will get money from transactions that happen via the tablets (ebooks, music, videos).

"At this time, we don't know what the tablets are capable of doing and certainly our concern is always going to be the safety and security of the facilities and staff", Miller said.

State officials say technology will improve operations and interaction with families, something experts say will help when inmates prepare to re-enter the community.
