Vice President Mike Pence left on Monday to attend the opening ceremony as part of a six day trip through Asia, which includes a stop off in Japan.

As well as the ice hockey players, North Korean athletes will compete in skiing and figure skating events.

Earlier last week, Ri Yong Ho, Foreign Minister of North Korea, accused the U.S. of undermining the inter-Korean reconciliation process and aggravating the situation in the Korean Peninsula.

The South Korean festivities have also brought renewed focus on tensions that have roiled the peninsula it shares with its isolated northern neighbor.

A North Korean art troupe would also likely travel by ship to perform during the Olympics under an exemption from bilateral sanctions, the South's Unification Ministry said on Monday. The ship now chiefly operates between North Korea and Russian Federation.

North Korea wanted to co-host the Olympics in 1988 with South Korea, but given their tense relationship with the country, many countries feared athletes, tourists and officials would not have free movement.
