The theater confirmed Mahoney's death to ABC sister station WLS-TV on Monday.

Being the action junkie I was growing up, I remember Mahoney playing Lieutenant Vince Hardy in Rowdy Harrington's Striking Distance.

"John's impact on this institution, on Chicago theatre, and the world of arts and entertainment is great and will endure", Madeline Long, a spokeswoman for the theater, said in an emailed statement. Legendary actor John Mahoney has sadly passed away on February 4 at the age of 77.

The theater, which also announced Mahoney's death, said it canceled its opening Monday night performance of "You Got Older", in Mahoney's honor. He was 77. In Chicago, Mahoney was a longtime and beloved ensemble member of Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre.

When "Frasier" was spun off as a separate show in 1993, Grammer begged Mr. Mahoney to take the part of Martin Crane, Frasier's father. His performance in John Guare's The House of Blue Leaves won him the 1986 Tony for Best Actor.

He was extremely secretive about his private life and never married, nor had kids. What was your favorite role of Mahoney's?

Scrubs star Zach Braff said he was "honored" to work with Mahoney and "he could not have been a kinder man". I thought, 'That's what I want. "When he had the opportunity to move to Los Angeles or NY he chose to stay here because he loved working here", an emotional Jones said of his longtime friend and collaborator. "He could have been living in Central Park West, and he greatly preferred Oak Park", Jones said. But I just miss home so much.
