Former Trump Adviser Pleads Guilty in the Mueller Inquiry

The indictments so far have not indicated that either Mr Gates or Mr Manafort had information about the central question of Mr Mueller's investigation, whether Mr Trump or his aides co-ordinated with the Russian government's efforts to disrupt the 2016 election.

Gates' guilty plea is a sign that the former Trump campaign aide may have information about more significant charges pertaining to the investigation's primary focus of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation.

Gates, who served as Manafort's deputy, is expected to testify against Manafort if his case goes to trial.

The indictment does not name other members of the group or say how many former politicians were involved.

The plea by Rick Gates revealed that he will help special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation in "any and all matters" as prosecutors continue to probe the 2016 campaign, Russian meddling and Gates' longtime business associate, one-time Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

"This is the fifth individual to plead guilty, and this is criminal conspiracy", Maccoby said. Gusenbauer and two lobbyists involved in Manafort's lobbying campaign met with members of Congress and staffers in 2013, according to Justice Department disclosures retroactively filed previous year by the lobbying firm Mercury.

Gates' plea deal comes in the midst of an increasingly hysterical campaign in the media against Russian Federation. "For reasons yet to surface he chose to do otherwise", Manafort said Friday.

In a statement prior to Friday's indictment, Manafort said he continues to maintain his "innocence" and Gates' plea would not alter his commitment to defending himself against "the untrue piled up charges".

Gates and Manafort were charged with a dozen counts of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in October, and they pleaded not guilty to those charges.

Mueller's investigation of Manafort and Gates has largely focused on the lobbying they did for a Russian-aligned Ukrainian political party, as well as various offshore companies and bank transfers that, prosecutors allege, were hidden from USA authorities.

Former White House national security adviser Michael T. Flynn pleaded guilty on December 1 to lying to investigators about his communications with a Russian diplomat during the presidential transition.

In October, the former campaign foreign policy adviser admitted to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about when he first started making foreign contacts.

Gates III, who helped lead President Donald Trump's campaign after making millions of dollars advising Ukraine's pro-Kremlin government, is expected to plead guilty on Friday, the latest former Trump aide to admit wrongdoing in the sprawling Russian Federation investigation. Like Flynn and Papadopoulos before him, he plead guilty to lying to federal agents. After entering his guilty plea, he was ordered not to contact other Trump officials and prohibited from foreign travel. They largely relate to a conspiracy laid out in his indictments, but they do reveal that Gates spoke with the Federal Bureau of Investigation earlier this month and lied during the interview.
