Former Republican Mississippi governor arrested at airport checkpoint with loaded handgun

Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour will be fined after a loaded pistol was found in his briefcase as he attempted to pass through airport security.

Lisa Farbstein, the Action Director of Media Relations and Press Secretary of TSA, added, "The former governor was arrested by airport police, posted bond, and was able to catch his flight".

Barbour served as RNC chair from 1993-1997 and later as governor of MS from 2004 to 2012. The officer immediately contacted the Columbus Regional Airport Authority Police Department, who responded to the incident.

In 2010 Barbour came under fire for racially insensitive comments.

"This was absent mindedness and nobody's fault but mine", he said.

Those remarks quashed his chances at a 2012 presidential run.

Officials said the new procedure will help TSA officers get a clearer X-ray image of the devices. Fines begin at $3920.

A spokesman confirmed Barbour's arrest to the Daily News, calling it an "honest mistake".

"We have to stay a step or two ahead of the terrorists", said Steven Crawford, deputy director of the TSA in Oklahoma.

"They did exactly what they should have done, which was treat me like anybody else", Barbour said.
