Fidel Castro's eldest son 'Fidelito' takes his life after months of depression

The popular eldest son of the late Cuban president Fidel Castro committed suicide on Thursday, state media reported.

"His delicate health situation required hospitalisation and then continued with outpatient follow-ups as he reintegrated himself back into society", a report on Cuban state television said.

In tragic news being reported from Cuba, the eldest son of late Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro committed suicide on Thursday morning, February 1.

Popularly known as "Fidelito" and striking a close resemblance to his father, he was the first-born and only son of Castro and his first wife, Mirta Diaz-Balart.

The 68-year-old never held a post under Castro's regime.

Raul Castro - who took over as president of Cuba when his brother died in 2016 - was said to have a good relationship with his nephew, who lived in the same Havana apartment building as his uncle for years. He had also headed Cuba's nuclear programme from 1980 to 1992, before it was suspended after the Soviet Union's collapse.

Cuba scholars say his mother took him with her to the United States when he was aged five after announcing she wanted a divorce from Castro, while he was imprisoned for an attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago.

Many Cubans remember him as a little boy dressed in an olive drab military uniform, accompanying his father on January 8, 1959 as he entered Havana triumphantly after the revolution.

No further details were provided about the circumstances of his death or funeral arrangements.

Popularly called "Fidelito", Castro Diaz-Balart worked as a nuclear physicist.
