Selectors Snub Glenn Maxwell For The ODI Side

White's promotion is another slap in the face for Maxwell, who was told by captain Steve Smith he needed to "train smarter". Maxwell has been in great form lately in all formats.

Brisbane player Chris Lynn leaves after getting out during the Big Bash League match.

While his domestic form has been strong, White's recall is all the more surprising given he was involved in a spat with national chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns last summer. While this will certainly reinvigorate the English squad, what remains to be seen is whether or not, they carry this form into the ODIs. "We get along really well, we've got a good friendship", Maxwell said.

The 34-year old's call-up comes after a relatively good domestic season where he is now the second highest run-scorer in the BBL and years of vast experience leading his domestic side, something to which Trevor Hohns, the Australian national selector, pointed out to their choice.

Ponting added: "As far as I'm concerned I don't think there's a better middle-order batsman than him to take that spot".

Given the impact and the form he has maintained throughout the Australian summer thus far, it seems freaky why Maxwell was snubbed.

A calf injury to explosive batsman Lynn opened an unlikely door for 34-year-old White, who played the last of his 88 ODIs in 2015 and has since been critical of a pro-youth policy he felt did not reward the performance of senior players.

White has been one of the premier performers in the BBL, sitting second on the run scoring charts with 285 at an average of 142.5.

The only question now is whether Maxwell will continue to look in from the outside, or whether he will regain his spot in the national team.

"He's one of the leading run-scorers in this season's KFC BBL, he's experienced, he's a very smart cricketer and he's a good fielder".

His recall leaves Victorian teammate Maxwell at the crossroads with the national side already planning for the 2019 World Cup.
