Panthers Finalizing Deal to Make Norv Turner Next Offensive Coordinator

As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday, Turner was head coach Ron Rivera's initial target when he made a decision to fire previous coordinator Mike Shula.

The hiring of Turner is a change in schematics for head coach Ron Rivera.

"I came to the conclusion going forward the thing we needed to do was bring in a different perspective, different ideas in terms of going forward to what I believe is our ultimate goal and that is winning a Super Bowl, " Rivera said Tuesday.

"I think it's just (Vikings coach Mike Zimmer and I) have different views on where the offense was going", he told ESPN at the time. He always has spoken highly of what Turner has done for him professionally and personally.

Rivera spent four years under Turner at San Diego from 2007-2010, including the last three years as the defensive coordinator.

Norv and Scott will be the third and fourth members of the Turner family to join Carolina's staff. Norv's brother Ron is an offensive consultant, and his nephew Cameron is the assistant quarterbacks coach. Scott was previously the Panthers' quality control coach in 2011 and 2012, a WRs coach for the Cleveland Browns in 2013 and the QB coach for the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-2016 before joining the Wolverines.

The Vikings were 5-2 when Norv Turner resigned in 2016, and he'll have another chance to build on his National Football League legacy and do so with one of the best athletes the quarterback position's ever seen.

Cam Newton has a new offensive mentor. Newton, 28, is coming off two of the worst seasons of his career in terms of passer rating, and had shoulder surgery last offseason to fix a partially-torn rotator cuff.

Turner, also a former head coach at Washington and Oakland, was scheduled to meet with Rivera and others in the organization on Wednesday night.
