Part of this early is going to be about survival.

And after a full week of practice only, UK's players are more than ready to go. He shot 51 percent from the floor in 16 games.

And that's the way it's going to be early on for this impossibly young team.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander followed Diallo with 13, Kevin Knox had 12 and Nick Richards chipped in with 10.

Calipari' starting lineup featured the freshmen tandem of Gilgeous-Alexander, Diallo, Knox, Richards and P.J. Washington. Utah Valley Coach Mark Pope admitted afterward his team had not practiced much against the zone.

Kentucky responded with an 18-0 run to regain control of the game and held on for a 73-63 win over the Wolverines, coached by former United Kingdom standout Mark Pope.

No real surprise there.

Vermont was the darling of the NCAA last season, piling up a school-record 29 victories while becoming the first team in league history to march through the America East conference undefeated. "Calipari asked. "(Defense.) Right, and we're trying to tell them".

"I was happy with how Wenyen played and competed", Calipari said.

"We just came out in the second half more confident and (played with) more energy", Diallo said. He's still very much a man-to-man guy. "Let's embrace it and know it's going to be hard to win these games".

"I'll do what I have to do to help my team win", he said Friday.

"Running, running. I think we ran the practice before our last exhibition", Green said.

"They will be an execution team", Calipari said.

One day after missing out on the top recruit in the Class of 2018, Kentucky landed a five-star prospect of their own. Two days later, Kentucky travels to Chicago to play fourth-ranked Kansas.

The No. 5 Wildcats host Utah Valley on Friday at Rupp Arena.

Vermont, a No. 13 seed, lost its NCAA tourney opener 80-70 to fourth-seeded Purdue.

On the one hand, United Kingdom will have had a game under its belt on Sunday. Johnson averaged 20.6 points per game for Boo Williams AAU team during the 2017 Nike EYBL. Was it just bad luck around the rim?

"My first real college game, first packed game, my parents are going to be here, my grandparents". Or was it something more than that? That'll definitely be a good game for us. "Guess what? Good for us, let's play them".
