IFFI jury chief Sujoy Ghosh resigns

IFFI jury chief Sujoy Ghosh resigns

Earlier in October, the ministry had objected to Sanal Kumar Sasidharan's film and its original title, Sexy Durga, denying it censor exemption for screening at the Jio MAMI 19th Mumbai Film Festival With Star 2017.

Ghosh confirmed the news to Indian Express but refused to comment further on the issue.

Several Iranian films on homosexuality, a topic which is considered off limits in the country, such as Be Like Others and Circumstances, have made it big at worldwide films festivals like Sundance. Following the announcement, a few members of the jury have criticised the Ministry's decision stating that they were not informed about the change. He also wrote a letter to the ministry, citing this.

Director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan expressed his anger and said that he is planning to approach court "They are supposed to publish the list two-three weeks before the festival begins, but they delayed it on objective". Instead of Nude, the Hindi movie Pihu by Vinod Kapri was finalised as the opening film of the festival. Filmmaker and jury member Ruchi Narain who had earlier told Mirror that the final list that had come out does not match the list submitted and she personally felt that Nude and S Durga were stunning quality films which festival audiences would really appreciate, echoed Advani's views.

According to the petition, the ministry "arbitrarily vetoed the decision of the jury without any authority of law, and excluded the petitioner's film from the Indian Panorama section, without notice to the petitioner, and also without assigning any reason".

Reacting to the decision taken by the Government of India to ban those movies, veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal backed Ghosh and said that the government should not support those people, who do not want the film to be shown.

I&B Ministry released the final list on November 9 and had taken off these two names, which were recommended by the jury.

About inaugurating the festival Khan says: "As IFFI gets into its 48th year, I look forward to inaugurating the festival and celebrating what I regard in many ways as the future of cinema". "It was a story that needed to be told, since no one asks these models about what their lives are like". It was selected as the opening film.

IFFI is slated to be held in Goa from November 20 to November 28. "Right now, the controversy is around Nude and S Durga but there are other good films that need to be watched and lauded so I don't wish to officially disassociate myself from the Panorama".
